finishing
Once we had every thing in place we could then play about with some effects such as fading and placing clips of bottles breaking to the beat over other footage, which made the video look alot better.
Once the film was compleated we had real difficulty bouncing it , as the computer would not except the dvd! Once saved to a hard drive we tryed putting in on to one of our own laptops, However we have ended up with the sound with no film. So we have the footage however it will not be put up untill this promblem is sorted!

Filming
I finaly started the filming, after weeks of trying to get people from broadcasting to help me out. I thought i had a crew together but then they backed out, which left me panicing. however i did manage to find replacements.
I firstly had to story bord the piece as the producer and director, befor i could start filming. I wanted
some input from the camera men, as i was unsure what would look good. Penny and Jai Ings suggested ideas
but they were leading astray from the theme of recycling. This was alot more work than i expected, and took alot longer than planned as it was my first time doing a project like this.
I was planning to shoot scenes on loaction at scrap yards and recycling tips around south east london, even abandoned buiuldings. but it was hard to fit this in with others, as alot of people were busy. I decided that the best bet was to shoot the video around college as it was easy to get every one together on the same day. I also filmed around Hither green on bin day and managed to film the Recycling men taking away the rubbish which was a stroke of luck.
I booked out a Pd 150 camera and a tripod for capturing the footage, which was perfect for the job. however it rained alot on our filiming days so alot of time was spent under a shelter waiting for the weather to clear up. typical!
The main story for this piece was to show me looking around finding bits to make samples from, and then showing the progress as i started to work on it. and i wanted to make the recying theme the main focus point so there is lots of footage of bins and signs. I also wanted to slice it up a bit by adding quick moving images of things such as breaking bottles,,so the video is more exciting and not boring to watch.
Once we had captured all the footage we then had the challenge of editing which we used Final Cut Pro for which i have not used befor. the task was to remove all the bad footage and cut the rest in to scenes. We then choose the ones we wanted to keep and got rid of the others. Then we placed the scenes in order and merged them together, which again took alot longer than expected.

making the tune

Here you can see what the song looked like once i had put all the layers together.
Once i had listened to the song a few times. i had to leave it unitll the next day, so my ears could adjust. I found that it was hard to hear any minor mistakes as i had been listening to it to long. the next day i tidyed the song up by changing the bass a little bit by giving it a little compression and a tiny bit of distortion aswell as doing a bit of atomation on the whole peice. I also found that i needed to turn up the vocals as they were drowned out my the music and couldn't be herd easily. on the lower screen shot u can see u can see the samples i got from the underground train, metal taps, rummiging througth the tip and the paper rips. Once i had recorded the sounds i made sure they sounded crystal clear by playing around with the eq and basically doing trial and error to see what sounds good. once i got the sound i wanted, i then repeated the sound, such as the metal taps(bottom left) so they formed a melody. I did this beofor adding the bass as i wanted the song to form around the sounds i recorded and not the samples i already had.
making of the drums etc.

Here u can see some of the screeen shots i took whilst working on Sony Sound forge 9.0, this peice of software is simuler to ones such as audacity, however in allows you to do more complex effects which really make a difference. This shot was taken off The crunching of the can. I cut away most of the sound but kept in the ripping of it, as it sounded good in the background. I put a high pass filter on it so it didnt sound quiet as tinny. once i made the sample sound good i then imported it to audacity which i find alot quicker to use if you already have samples than programs such as Logic or pro tools. However Pro tools is usefull when it comes to mastering as it can be much more precise. The other screen shot is of the drum break. This took me the longest to do as it takes a while to find a good beat by slicing and cutting the samples so they fit nicely together. This is what i worked on first, as once i found a beat the rest was eaiser to do. I played around alot with distortion, high and low pass filters parametric eq band, as well as D verb and Re verb which really changed the sound of the samples. I added 909 bass samples once i had the melody and chorous, as i didnt want the song to sound to high pitch,( as in tinny) and wanted to make it sound like it could get away with being played in a club with out people realising what i made it out off. I guess i wanted to prove that i could make a good song with out using just samples and thinking outside the box a bit.
I made the bass using a midi keybored also using the pitch and jog wheel , you can tell this by the bassline, how it dips.
I was influenced by Metal Heads, a drum and bass group founded by Goldie and there style of liquid drum and bass, with lots of clashes of snares aswell as rolling bass lines.

i rounded up all of my recylible goods and started to record sounds. I tryed to think of inventive ways to do this. cans and bottles were used mostly in this song. I found that flicking an empty can which hadn't been opend made a good sound. this involved draining the can througth a small hole with out causing much damage to it.i used this sound for the kick drum, and you can hear it at the beginning of the song clearly if u listen carefully. I also ripped the can to create a build up to the sample of the tube station anoucment i recoreded on the tube. I hardly changed anything with the sample apart from staggering it a bit to create a better effect. I added this just as i thought the song needed a breaking point where it can build up a bit even though it is a little bit irrelivent. and the recording of the tube fitted in well with the song.Hence why im naming it 'Mind the Gap'.
I made most of the drum break out of broken bottles, and tapping of metal and this really sets the tone of the song giving it almost a tribal feeling. i created the cymbal sound from breaking glass bottles on to more broken glass, this was very fun althougth it did create a mess, i also cracked the glass which is very subtle in the song. I did most of the recording outside, however i tended to pick up other noise aswell so some bottles were smashed in the bath. The main melody is made from a metal pole being tapped agaist a smaller one to create quiet a sharpe sounding noise, which fits in nicely with the sound of the broken bottles. Ripping of paper was another sound i used in this song which is almost unreconisable but can be heard just befor dropping in to the main beat after the tube sample

I started to collect cans and bottles so i could start to make my samples for my track. I managed to get a load of red bull cans off red bull, as they were interested in my project and do a compotition simuler called Can U Make Music, in which u have to make a song just using there cans.
I decided to make a drum and base song as it is the music i am the most familier with, and i know how to structure it correctly.

Today i have been trying to think about the kind of music i want to produce. e.g house, dub-step etc.. I will be looking in to artists who make inventive sounds out of different objects. I am also starting to collect bottles and cans and plan to go to a recycleing tip to record atmos and various different sounds on location.
I will also be going to scrap yards around south east London hopefully during this week to collect bits and bobs which i want to use, and will also be recording some sounds on site aswell as taking pictures.
Once i have compleated the song, im likely to come back to these sites to record some footage for the music video.
